NOTICE OF DEATH - PETER GETHIN
It is with great regret that the Club has to announce the death of Life Member and former Director, Peter Gethin, who passed away on the 5th December.
Peter, who joined the BRDC in 1971, was best known for winning the Italian Grand Prix that year by the closest of margins. It was only his second start for BRM, Peter having been drafted in to fill the seat left vacant following Pedro Rodriguez’s death at the Norisring. He remained with the team until the season end of 1972.
Peter’s F1 career had begun when he was called up by McLaren to replace Bruce following his tragic testing accident at Goodwood in 1970. It was to conclude with races for Embassy Hill in 1974, but it was in British and Tasman F5000 that Peter enjoyed his greatest success winning both championships. His last major victory was for Team McLaren at Road America in the Can-Am Series during 1977.
After his racing career ended Peter managed Beppe Gabbiani before his appointment as Team Manager for Toleman F1 team in 1984. He returned to F3000 in 1986 setting up Peter Gethin Racing.
Peter served as Director of the BRDC between 2005 and 2008.
Condolences have been passed to his wife, Robbie. Peter's funeral will take place at 3pm on Friday 9 December 2011 at St Nicholas' Church, London Road, Arundel BN18 9AT. All are welcome to attend, but there will also be a Memorial Service at a date to be announced in the future.
