NOTICE OF DEATH - GRAHAM MACBETH - 1927 - 2016

The Club regrets to report that Associate Member Graham Macbeth passed away on the morning of the 23 February aged 88.  Graham joined the Club in 1975 but had been a Member of the Guild of Motoring Writers since 1955. 

Graham, a Guild member for just over 60 years, became Assistant Honorary Secretary in 1962 before taking on the role of Honorary Secretary in 1976.  A Guild Life Member, he was Chairman in 1974 and made a Vice-President at the 2008 AGM when he handed over the role of Honorary Secretary to Chris Adamson.

Graham had been a motoring writer since completing his apprenticeship in 1950 as a reporter on the East Grinstead Observer and Sussex Express County Herald.  From then until 1980 he was the motoring correspondent for the Brighton Evening Argus.  At the same time between 1955-66 he worked for the British Automobile Racing Club as successively Press Officer, General Secretary and Competitions Manager.  Between 1967 and 1979 he was Press Officer at Brands Hatch and its associated group of motor racing circuits, he joined Practical Motorist magazine in 1979 as Assistant Editor, then Deputy Editor 1986-93.

The funeral service will take place at Poole Crematorium, Gravel Hill, Broadstone, Poole, Dorset BH17 9BQ at 2pm on Friday 11 March, followed by tea at Les Bouviers Restaurant, Arrowsmith Road, Canford Magna, Poole, Dorset BH21 3BD.  The family would like to know numbers of those attending the tea – please advise generalsec@gomw.co.uk if you are planning to attend.

Family flowers only but donations may be made to The Guild of Motoring Writers Benevolent Fund in Graham’s memory.
The BRDC extends its sincere condolences to Graham’s wife Mary and family at this sad time.
