BEST OF BRITISH TO DRIVE IN 50TH GP PARADES

Some of the greatest names in British motor sport, including three British Grand Prix winners and one World Champion, are among the latest drivers confirmed to take part in commemorative parades, celebrating Silverstone’s 50th Grand Prix, at this year’s FORMULA 1 SANTANDER BRITISH GRAND PRIX (04-06 July).
British motor racing legends Damon Hill, Johnny Herbert, David Coulthard, Martin Brundle, Derek Warwick, Jackie Oliver and Paul Stewart are the most recent names added to the line-up for the Silverstone50 parades.
The illustrious list of Formula 1® World Champions, British Grand Prix winners and British motor sport greats now confirmed to drive in the parades, includes:
• Sir Jackie Stewart OBE - two-times British Grand Prix winner (1969, 1971) and three-times F1® World Champion (1969, 1971, 1973), driving his 1969 British Grand Prix winning Matra MS80
• Alain Prost OBE - five-times British Grand Prix winner (1983, 1985, 1989, 1990, 1993) and four-times F1® World Champion (1985, 1986, 1989, 1993), driving Mark Webber’s 2012 British Grand Prix winning Red Bull RB8
• Damon Hill OBE - 1994 British Grand Prix winner and 1996 Formula 1® World Champion, driving his father Graham Hill’s 1968 Lotus 49B
• Johnny Herbert - 1995 British Grand Prix winner, driving Sir Jackie Stewart’s 1973 World Championship winning Tyrrell 006
• David Coulthard MBE - 1999 and 2000 British Grand Prix winner, driving Mark Webber’s 2012 British Grand Prix winning Red Bull RB8
• Rubens Barrichello - 2003 British Grand Prix winner and 11-times F1® Grand Prix winner, driving the Williams FW07B, a tribute to Clay Regazzoni’s 1979 British Grand Prix winning Williams FW07
• Jackie Oliver - Former Lotus F1 driver with 50 F1® starts, 1969 Le Mans 24 Hours winner, driving Jim Clark’s 1965 British Grand Prix winning Lotus 33
• Derek Warwick - 147 F1® starts and President of the British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC), driving a McLaren M29C (as driven by Alain Prost and John Watson at the 1980 British Grand Prix)
• Martin Brundle - 158 F1® starts, including nine podiums, and 1990 Le Mans 24 Hours winner, driving James Hunt’s 1977 British Grand Prix winning McLaren M26 (also being driven by 2014 Monaco Historic GP winner, Michael Lyons)
• David Brabham - 24 F1® starts, 2009 Le Mans 24 Hours winner, driving his late father Sir Jack Brabham’s 1960 British Grand Prix winning Cooper Climax T53
• Dario Franchitti MBE - three-times Indy500 winner and four-times IndyCar Champion driving Jim Clark’s 1963 British Grand Prix winning Lotus 25
• Adrian Newey OBE - designer of ten F1® World Constructors’ Championship winning cars, will drive the March 711 that Ronnie Peterson drove to 2nd place at the 1971 British Grand Prix
• Paul Stewart - owner of Stewart Grand Prix team (1997-1999), driving his father Sir Jackie Stewart’s 1973 World Championship winning Tyrrell 006
Silverstone will be transferred to a bygone era as these legends of British and world motor sport drive some of the most celebrated cars in British Grand Prix and Formula 1® history around the famous Grand Prix Circuit.
More British drivers have gone on to win their home race than any other nationality; 12 in total, ten of whom have won at Silverstone.
Included in that list is Damon Hill, 1994 British Grand Prix winner, who commented: “I can honestly say that winning the British Grand Prix was one of the best days of my life. You cannot beat the atmosphere around Silverstone; I just love the buzz and excitement from the fans. Silverstone is a very special venue, the spiritual home of Formula 1®, and these parades are a perfect way to celebrate its 50th Grand Prix. It will be a really special experience driving my dad’s Lotus 49B, the car he drove in the 1968 British Grand Prix.”
David Coulthard, two-times British Grand Prix winner, said: “Winning my home Grand Prix was a very special feeling and one of the proudest moments of my racing career; to win it twice, back-to-back, was unbelievable. Silverstone is steeped in Formula 1® history – it is a race that every driver wants win and have on his CV. What better way to commemorate this special milestone than to reunite the drivers and cars that have played such an important part in the Silverstone story.”
Johnny Herbert, 1995 British Grand Prix winner, added: “I always love coming back to Silverstone; you can sense the history and atmosphere every time you walk through the gates. I’ll never forget my win in 1995, it was one of the greatest moments of my career and something that will stay with me forever. I’m really excited to be involved in the parades and the Silverstone 50 celebrations; it’s a fantastic line-up of drivers and cars that have made this circuit so special.”
The ‘Silverstone50’ parades will take place at the following times during the British Grand Prix: Friday 04 July - 12:50-13:05; Saturday 05 July - 12:05-12:20; Sunday 06 July - 11:10-11:25. Timings are provisional and subject to change.
The 2014 FORMULA 1 SANTANDER BRITISH GRAND PRIX will be the 50th Grand Prix to be held at Silverstone since Luigi Villoresi won the first ever event on 02 October 1948, two years before the inauguration of the FIA Formula One World Championship in 1950.
